Spain is different

Hoy más que nunca desde que estoy en Oslo, he tenido esta sensación. España es diferente. Y, aunque me pese, este "diferente" hoy tiene pocas connotaciones positivas.

Porque solo cuando sales de tu ciudad, de tu país y de tu entorno eres consciente de lo que tienes y de lo que necesitas. Una de las condiciones por las que conseguí este Erasmus fue mi "buen nivel de inglés". Y al llegar aquí, y empezar una conversación con cualquier noruego, holandés o alemán, me pregunto si no he tirado tantos años aprendiendo un idioma para ni siquiera llegar a dominarlo.

Desde España parecerá que estoy exagerando, pero cada día soy más consciente de que o bien nuestro sistema educativo no funciona, o bien somos una sociedad que todavía no ha sucumbido a la "americanización" y en el empeño de mantener nuestra identidad no retransmitimos, por ejemplo, las series o las películas en versión original.

Y para aumentar mi pesimismo, el profesor Robert Vaagan me ha demostrado la invisibilidad de España para el resto de Europa. "Wikileaks se ayudó de 5 grandes periódicos de diferentes países para transmitir la información". Ha recordado todos, menos El País (http://www.elpais.com/).

Today, more than ever since I am in Oslo, I felt this feeling. Spain is different. And, unless I would not like to say it, this "different" today has no possitive connotations.

It's only when you've left your city, your country and your social environment when you realize what you have and what you lack of. One of the reasons why I achieved this Erasmus was my "good English level". And when I arrived and began a conversation with any of the erasmus students, I wondered if I had ruined so many years learning this language with not so good results.

From Spain, probably people will think that I am exagerating, but each day I am more possitive about that our education system is not working at all. Or may, ours is a society that has not succumbed to the "americanization" and in our aim of maintaining the Spanish identity we don't broadcast, for instance, any series or film in their original version.

Finally, my professor Robert Vaagan increased my pessimism provig how invisible Spain is for the rest of Europe. "Wikileaks found the support of 5 important newspapers of different countries to spread the information". He remembered all, except El País (http://www.elpais.com/).
